Leadership Alignment: Identifying Disconnects

Leadership alignment is a significant challenge for many organizations. Often, signs of misalignment are present but go unaddressed, leading to further escalation and ultimately requiring remedial actions.

In my experience dealing with organizational misalignment, I have identified three key elements that serve as warning signs:

  1. Breach of Trust: Any signs of miscommunication and lack of transparency within the leadership team suggest that members have opted out of trusting each other, or that they never truly opted in.

  2. Disconnection from Vision and Future: While leaders may dream of flying in formation, changes in technology and the degree of adoption of a digital culture might exacerbate the natural tendency of departments to be siloed, hindering the ability to work towards a common vision.

  3. Personal Resilience and Wellbeing: Adversity is commonplace in organizations, but not everyone is equipped to withstand and recover from it. It is important to consider the wellbeing of all team members, and ensure that they have the resources and support they need to handle predicaments.

Ignoring these warning signs will deepen misalignment, leading to greater issues in the long run. Instead, when dealt with promptly, by focusing on trust, vision, and personal wellbeing, organizations can build a strong foundation for effective leadership.
