Finding Meaning in Digital Isolation
Recent data published by LinkedIn, reports that 54% of senior leaders currently undertake virtual meetings, 36% of the workers are happier working from home.
For people who have reported to feel happier working from home, it will be harder to switch back to a physical mode as they experienced a taste of life-balance which was missing from their lives lately. The feeling of belonging will eventually become contained, and the social comfort zone of people might even shrink.
Presenting themselves the next morning, in a physical and sterilized - both metaphorically and literally speaking - environment, will prove to be hard if the meaning for this is lost.
At a practical level, executives need to assign the right meaning to the current situation and find the right ways to communicate it to the people. The digital isolation needs clear communication, and leaders cannot hide in the “hard work” cave. Clarity, utmost Transparency and Visibility are musts!
The crisis will expose the lack of meaning, hiding behind nicely stated visions and missions. If it is not clear to leaders, what “this” is all about, employees will feel even less motivated when this will be over, and it will be over!
